Learner drivers may have to wait six months before taking test
Learner drivers in England and Wales could face a minimum period of up to six months between sitting their theory and practical tests, the BBC can reveal. The Department for Transport has announced the appointment of Beverley Warmington as DVSA’s new Chief Executive. Beverley will take up the post on 5 January 2026. The appointment follows Loveday Ryder’s decision to step down as Chief Executive.

Changes to The Driving Test Nov. 2025
From November 24, 2025, the DVSA introduced key driving test changes in Great Britain, focusing on real-world safety by increasing time on faster/rural roads, reducing routine stops from four to three, making emergency stops less frequent (1 in 7 tests), and allowing the independent driving section to use more of the test time, often following a satnav, to better prepare new drivers for diverse conditions and reduce young driver accidents.
